Wonderfully Weathery Books selected as Top 5 in the Fáilte initiate 2023 with Carrolls Irish Gifts. I presented to the panel in early August and although my books weren’t selected as the overall winner I was blown away to be selected as part of their Top 5 and learnt so much from the experience along the way.
Fáilte is an amazing initiative set up by Carrolls Irish Gifts in 2023. Carroll’s want to support and promote small Irish businesses and bolster their profile internationally and here at home. They wish to select new Irish business to stock in their stores nationwide.
Congratulations to the overall winner @asgaeilge
Thank you to the team at Carrolls Irish Gifts for making myself and the weather crew so welcome.

Mummy I think I can smell the rain! Even though water has no smell you can actually smell the rain! So yes rain is smelly!
]]>MUMMY I THINK I CAN SMELL THE RAIN!Todays Wednesday weather fact is all about the rain and how it smells! Yes it’s smells!!
Water doesn’t actually have a smell- so what makes rain smell? Well it’s all to do with chemicals on the ground that get shot up into the air when rain hits it!
There’s a molecule called GEOSMIN which is created by bacteria in the soil. When the rain falls on it, it creates little pockets of air containing tiny amounts of Geosmin.
The rain traps and then releases these little scented air pockets and they travel out into the air and that’s the smell that our sniffers picks up!
The earthy smell of rain even has a name - Petrichor 💦
So the next it rains, remember to open those nostrils and sniff the air to see if you can smell the rain!

It all happens when the light of the sun heats the water lying on the Earth below. Water in streams, rivers, lakes, even water drops on leaves or sweat on animals! The heat of the sun warms up these droplets to the point that they turn to water vapour - like the steam you see coming out of a kettle - this vapour is light and rises up into the air easily - it then combines with cooler air to form what we see as clouds. The clouds eventually become so jammed with busy little water droplets that they burst and it starts to rain causing all the water to fall back to earth in the form of rain!! This is called the water cycle and is how the water gets into the sky! A M A Z I N G 💦

When the temperature drops, the water vapor in the air condenses to form water droplets. These water droplets attach themselves to the dust particles in the air. Together, they hang in the air. This is what is known as Fog - it reduces visibility and creates a cloudy experience! Did you know that the city of San Francisco’s regularly gets hit by severe fog in the morning and evenings - the fog occurs so much that the people of San Fran have even given it a name - Karl the Fog - he’s even got his own Instagram account @karlthefog with nearly a quarter of a million followers!
If you want to learn more about another friendly fog check out my new book ‘Chloe Cloud and the Friendly Fog’ @ www.wonderfullyweatherybooks.com
]]>The sun appears a yellow colour because it is sends out more yellow light then the other colours. Clouds reflect all the colours the exact same amount so they look white!

]]>Other people think the blue sky is from all the water that is present in the atmosphere but again nope... there are still blue skies in the dessert where there is no water present in the air!
So why does the sky appear blue? It’s all to do with how we see light! The white light of the sun is made up all the colours of the rainbow even if you can’t see them in the sunlight. ( red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet).
Light hits the earth and travels in waves ... red waves are long and lazy whilst blue and violet waves are more scattered than the other waves and appear more easily.
Balls of energy in the atmosphere move the blue light around much faster then the other colours as it moves in smaller waves so this is why we see the sky as blue! Also our eyes are more sensitive to blues so that’s why we see blue!
